The Sonnet House loves celebrating and honestly we will use just about any excuse in the book to do it. This week is Hannah + Joe’s first wedding anniversary and looking back through their beautiful wedding photos from Linda Threadgill Photography is giving us all the feels!
While Hannah + Joe chose to get married in Birmingham, Hannah is originally from Illinois with family all over the Midwest. It was important to them to incorporate part of Hannah’s home traditions into their Southern wedding and reception. In Northern areas it is far more traditional to have a plated seated meal instead of a buffet or stations style reception. Being that they were getting married in March it is always a good idea to have a tent on reserve in the case of cold weather or rain since guests would all need to be seated together for dinner. That ended up being a wise decision since we did have traditionally cool weather and we thank Event Rentals Unlimited for doing a great job with the tent as always.
The newlyweds wanted a formal dinner while bringing in cuisine that represented who they were. Passed appetizers during cocktail hour included Baked Brie, Honey, & Candied Pecans in crispy phyllo cups, Bacon Wrapped Dates, and Pimento Cheese with Pepper Jelly Crostinis. Guests then settled in for dinner with a traditional house salad followed by a BBQ spread that would make John Calloway himself proud. Whether their preference was Smoked Brisket, Pulled Pork or Grilled Conecuh Sausage, guests palettes had more than enough options to select from or they could enjoy all three! Sides included Southern staples such as Baked Beans, Macaroni and Cheese, Collard Greens and of course, jalapeno and regular cornbread. Hungry yet?
Once the party began everyone was dazzled and entertained by one of our favorite bands, Nationwide Coverage. If you’re on the hunt for a fabulous party band that covers all of your favorites then look no further. Matt Casey and his group always do an amazing job and are super affordable. For the ceremony, Cahaba River Strings played classical favorites like Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, Canon in D, The Wedding March, and Ave Maria during Communion.
Corey Daniel Florals created lush and garden inspired centerpieces in shades of white, blush and green in clear glass containers surrounded by romantic candlelight. Hannah chose to use an eight foot tall wooden cross from Prophouse Birmingham as the centerpiece of the wedding ceremony which the couple chose to hold in our Chapel. It was adorned with a lovely badge of flowers which coordinated with the rest of the wedding flowers. Also important to their wedding ceremony was the fact that Hannah’s childhood Priest made the journey from Illinois to Birmingham to bring the two together in marriage and to distribute their first Communion as husband and wife.
