Many couples often think of us as an outdoor venue, which is true, but did you know The Sonnet House actually does a handful of planned indoor ceremonies each year? True story. When we first opened in 2007 most of our bookings were for planned indoor ceremonies. As the barn craze and outdoor weddings picked up in popularity we certainly shifted to doing most ceremonies either at the fireplace or by the tree/barn. Interestingly enough, we have over eight planned chapel weddings for 2018 and that number seems to be growing each week. This was also the case for Shelby + TJ’s April wedding.
No matter where you plan your Sonnet House wedding, the chapel is always available for use and is such a great back up plan in the case of bad weather. Having an indoor ceremony also gives you more options for setting a ceremony time since you don’t have to worry about having enough lighting for photos and there’s also that thing over your head called a roof which gives you a peace of mind when planning anything in Alabama, especially the Spring and Summer. There were no worries on April 21st however since we ended up with an absolutely perfect day without a rain cloud in sight.
Not only were their blue skies and fluffy white clouds as far as you could see, but these two lovebirds have electric personalities that light up a room the second they enter. Working with Shelby and her mom, Lisa, during the planning process was a treat. They also put together a wonderful vendor team which made the day go off without a hitch. Corey Daniel Florals created beautiful tablescapes of cream, white, and green flowers including anemones (one of Shelby’s favorites), roses, alstroemeria, hydrangea, Italian ruscus, tree fern, and more. The entire day was captured by one of our favorites, Laura Wilkerson Photography, who always makes wedding days so much more fun.
Shelby was styled to perfect from head to toe by one of Birmingham’s best hair and make up artists, Danielle Ivy Chiepalich, and wore a stunning Ella Rosa gown from Bella’s Bridal in Hoover, Alabama while her bridesmaids wore pink, floor length dresses from Bella Bridesmaid. On Site Productions was here for both ceremony and reception music and, as always, kept the crowd on their feet until it was time to see the newlyweds off. Shelby + TJ exited their reception in style via a tunnel of light up balloons and glow sticks.
Catching up with Shelby + TJ | November 2017
Tell us a little about yourselves. | TJ and I met through a small group at Church of the Highlands, a sand volleyball small group to be exact! We met on June 21st 2016 and TJ had just got home from his military deployment three or four days prior to that day. God’s timing is perfect! I actually was the one to make the first move by asking him if he had a girlfriend and from there we started dating and we have been together ever since! Currently we are enjoying married life in our new home and our favorite thing to do is to travel together.
How did you know The Sonnet House was the perfect wedding venue for you? | It was white, pretty and Southern. We also were very impressed with how everything was well managed and taken care of. We knew it would make for a stress free experience!
You planned an indoor Chapel ceremony from day 1 and we have quite a few brides for 2018 who are planning indoor ceremonies. How much less stressful was it planning to be inside rather than fretting over the weather? | Yes! I was looking for a chapel from day one. I did not want to worry about the temperature, bugs, wind, sweat, grass, etc. Because of this choice I never had to worry about my ceremony and knew exactly what to expect and invision for that beautiful moment for when the doors would open and I would get to walk down the aisle to my husband! I think eliminating the worries that come with an outside ceremony was one of the many reasons my wedding day felt so smooth and perfect!
TJ, you had a fabulous groom’s cake table display which was created using your own fishing nets, vest, etc. Tell us about your favorite hobbies that inspired your groom’s cake. | TJ loves to fly fish and hunt! He enjoys really any outdoor activity. He wanted to incorporate all his favorite things to represent him instead of having a plain cake without any character!
One of our favorite photos from your wedding is the one of Shelby popping the champagne with her bridesmaids and you submitted that into our favorite photo contest recently, can you re-tell the story for us? | I am not really a champagne drinker so I had never actually popped a top before! I struggled from the beginning and it took me what seemed like forever to get it opened. The picture might have been posed, but the actual “pop” was definitely a surprise to all who was around- especially for me because what was not pictured was that I totally popped it in my face and got it all over me. After it popped I apparently kept it tilted and my cousin who had bought the champagne ran over telling/yelling that I was wasting the good stuff! See we were supposed to use a cheap bottle for the picture, but somehow the “good stuff” was the only bottle we could find at the time! It definitely was a funny moment for everyone and a favorite picture for many!
You had lots of personal touches to your wedding day, can you tell us about some of your favorites? | We loved sharing our vows in front of everyone reading from journals we both picked out for one another. We now have them placed in our home. Writing our vows in journals helped us keep up with them and provide a great keepsake! TJs mom and grandmother did all the party favors and they did a fabulous job I must add! I love that they were able to play a part in planning and help us with the small details that made the reception so perfect!
