The Sonnet House recently had our first planning meeting with Lauren + Dusty for their June 2016 wedding. We had a great time deciding on a catering menu as well as looking through her bridal inspiration photos to create the perfect concept for her wedding flowers.
We always enjoy our first planning session with our couples because it gives us a chance to not only get started on what will be one of the most important days of their life, but it also gives us an opportunity to get to know them in a more casual setting.
The relationship between a couple and their wedding photographer is no different. Many wedding photographers will incorporate a Bridal portrait session or an engagement session into their packages. Those that don’t, will offer it as an add-on. We always encourage our brides to do an engagement session (and Bridals too if the budget allows for it), not only because you’ll get photos that you’ll treasure for the rest of your lives, but because it gives you time to get to know your photographer and vice versa. Your photographer has one of the most important jobs on your wedding day. Knowing what you (and your groom) like or don’t like is extremely important. It also gives them a chance to see what directions you take best, and maybe even find “your good side.” A lot of times we’ll see that a couple may be more awkward for the first part of the wedding day if they’ve never been photographed professionally before or if the groom has never even met the photographer.
Lauren + Dusty have chosen Kim Brantley Photography to capture their big day and we’d say from the look of their engagement session – that was a wise decision. During our planning meeting Lauren told us that they had just received their photos back and they love them! I asked to see a few and my jaw immediately hit the floor. They chose Oak Mountain State Park for the setting and although the day called for rain, the clouds parted about ten minutes before they were set to start.
We asked Lauren + Dusty a few questions about themselves, their relationship, and their upcoming Summer wedding. Here’s what they had to say:
How did you guys meet? We met through a philanthropic organization at the University of Alabama called UA Dance Marathon. The organization raises money for Children’s Hospital of Alabama, and we were filming a funny teaser video the day we met. Dusty was interested at first sight, but I had a boyfriend at the time. Still, we became good friends. Over the next two years, the timing was never really right for dating but eventually it worked out our senior year!
Where and how did Dusty propose? At the end of June, Dusty had just finished a quarter of his doctorate program in Georgia and came home for a three week break. He said he needed a relaxing weekend of pampering and took the two of us for manicures and pedicures as well as a couples’ massage. He told me to pick out a cute outfit because he had a surprise planned. When we pulled up to Birmingham Botanical Gardens, I thought we were going to spend a few hours walking around the gardens, because I love flowers. As we walked through, there was a wedding going on, so his opening line was, “Well, speaking of weddings…” After walking underneath a gazebo, he got down on one knee, and I said yes! Two of our best friends (and now my bridesmaids) jumped out of their hiding spots with cameras clicking, having captured the entire event. Later on, we were going to dinner with the two girls from the gardens and walked into a restaurant where both of our families and lots of friends were waiting to celebrate with us. Overall the day was perfect and everything I could have ever dreamed of!
Do you plan on incorporating your engagement photos into the wedding? Yes! We are definitely using our pictures for our Save the Date as well as decoration at the rehearsal dinner and the wedding reception. We love the beautiful bookcase at The Sonnet House and plan to display them for our guests to see.
Dusty, what are you looking forward to the most at the wedding? The thing that I am most looking forward to about the wedding is getting to see all of my family and friends in one place celebrating Lauren and I as we start our life together as a married couple.
Lauren, what has been your favorite part of the planning process so far? I think that my favorite part has been coming up with the vision and feel for the wedding. I love planning events and parties for family and friends, but have never done anything as large as a wedding. I have loved perusing huge stacks of wedding magazines to find small details that I love and plan on incorporating into our big day. I can’t wait to see it all come together beautifully!
No worries, Lauren, everything is going to be beautiful! Enjoy Lauren + Dusty’s romantic engagement session at Oak Mountain State Park. We can’t wait to see the wedding photos!
